Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when numerous of them floated into the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the Belarusian boundary.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
When questioned about why criminals use a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Officials added that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a period of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
