“That was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with our fans seated near me,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, Cowboys fans. The whole venue was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the elation following the team’s last score. “I just put up the wrong finger,” he remarked. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Proprietor Fines
This is not the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Recent cases include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was fined $300,000 for tossing a beverage at spectators in January 2024.
- Former Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a similar obscene gesture.
Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy proprietor.
